Philosophy Safaris

This is a bespoke adult philosophy tutoring service. To book a session email me at jules@philosophyforlife.org. I only have a handful of clients at any time so spaces are limited and there is usually a waiting list.

If you want to try a pre-recorded course, try my Essential Philosophy for Modern Life course, which you can find out about and purchase here.

Philosophy Safari gives you the unique experience of personal live teaching and one-to-one dialogue with an entertaining, well-informed and empathetic practical philosopher,

In weekly 75-minute sessions, we go on a philosophical safari, identifying and learning to know different philosophers, ideas, schools and movements, and bouncing ideas and observations off one another.

You get to choose what we cover - I research the topic, set you some optional voluntary reading or podcasts to listen to, and then we discuss the topic in a one-hour Zoom session, going off on whatever diversions you want. I then send you the slides and can also send a recording of the session.

Over time, you will develop a map of the history of ideas and how they feed into the headlines today. You will also gain the ability to see situations from multiple perspectives (epistemic flexibility). This will keep your mind nimble, illuminate your conversation, deepen your understanding of events, and enrich your life.

Cicero said of philosophy:

these studies are the food of youth, the delight of old age; the ornament of prosperity, the refuge and comfort of adversity; a delight at home, and no hindrance abroad; they are companions by night, and in travel, and in the country.

Amber Atherton, founder of Zyper, says:

‘Investing in a tutor has been my most rewarding indulgence over the last six months. Jules is a brilliant teacher.’

Paul Gustard, coach of Harlequins rugby club, former coach at England and Saracens, says:

‘Philosophy club with Jules was the best thing we did all season.’

I also run occasionaly philosophy groups for couples or for groups of friends, at the same basic rate. Juliana, head of a marketing agency in the US, bought an online philosophy session as a gift for her partner and his mates, who discussed the philosophy of sport. She says:

‘It was a total hit. He said it was the best present he’d ever got.’

Your guide is me, Jules Evans, a leading practical philosopher, author and broadcaster. I got a first from Oxford in English Literature, then spent a decade as a journalist (mainly in Russia), before becoming a practical philosopher. I’ve written award-winning and best-selling philosophy books, hosted philosophy shows for Radio 4 and an Audible podcast, done a TED talk with 600,000 views, and I write a much-loved weekly newsletter. I’ve also taught philosophy at the School of Life, the Escape the City school, the Idler Academy, and to elite sports-stars including Owen Farrell and Aaron Ramsey.

My book Philosophy for Life has been published in 22 countries and was a Times book of the year. The comedian Ade Edmondson said: ‘Jules’ book saved my life’. Derren Brown said: ‘I highly recommend Philosophy for Life.’
